Our society is consisted of two genders-male and female.Every gender has his own psychological features.These features influence the future of two genders. Self-esteem and achievement motivation are two important factors of psychological terms.And the two factors are in the individual personality structure can prompt personal mental activity and mental development.This thesis takes the perspective of gender difference in order to find the different features of self-esteem and achievement motivation between two genders, especially,the features of female students.And then educate females effectively as whole persons.It also carries out the research on university students' relation of self-esteem and achievement motivation in Dalian with quantitative method.This thesis explores self-esteem and achievement motivation from the perspective of gender differences.And it could be divided into five chapters. Chapter1 is the introduction about the definitions of self-esteem,achievement motivation,gender and gender difference.This chapter also gives readers some clues as to why I choose gender difference in self-esteem and achievement motivation as research orientation.In this chapter the research questions and hypothesizes are concerned.Chapter 2 is literature review.It traces the historical study about gender difference in self-esteem and achievement motivation both abroad and in China,and introduces some relevant theories and methods of this research,but the focus of this chapter is the underpinning theories of gender difference in self-esteem and achievement motivation.Chapter3 reports a survey carded out in two universities of Dalian and data analysis result with SPSS along three dimensions of self-esteem(affirmative self-esteem,academic self-esteem, social self-esteem),and two dimensions of achievement motivation(attaining success,avoiding failure),and the relations of self-esteem and achievement motivation.Student's self-esteem and achievement motivation on the primary measures,such as grade,age,major and school type are mentioned.Chapter4 discusses the implications of the findings for ESL teaching and educating our students as a whole person.Chapter 5 is the conclusion of this thesis.
