On The Rectification Of Writing Style

The rectification of writing style not only bore on the trends of social thought and the culture of imperial examination of the Ming Dynasty,but also deeply influenced the development of Ming literature,in particular literature of the middle & late periods of Ming Dynasty.This paper attempts to analyze the development of the writing style and literature concept of Ming literature through study of the rectification of writing style, which will be carried out in the history context of ideological trends and imperial examination.The thesis consists of seven parts.The introduction recollects and summarizes the previous research of the rectification of writing style,thus leads to the foundation and significance of this research.Chapter One probes into the root of the rectification of writing style,thus reveals the entire process of its development from Liang Dynasty to Ming Dynasty.Chapter Two discusses the difference between rectification of writing style carried out by government and by the scholars;the latter has less connection with politics and the imperial examination but close connection with literature.Chapter Three states the relation between rectification of writing style and the trends of social thought.The confrontation between those who support this movement and those who against reflects the collision of different trends of social thought.Chapter Four analyzes the relation between rectification of writing style and the culture of imperial examination through the tragedy of Tan Yuanchun,which shows the influence of this movement upon the fate of men of letters.Chapter Five discusses the evaluation of elegant style and ornate style as well as the writing style of middle & late Ming literature.Their interplay was embodied in the evolution of the evaluation of elegant style and ornate style.The conclusion makes a brief analysis of the research prospect of the rectification of writing style.
