Business Chinese teaching materials has developed rapidly in the past decade, but when studied closely into these materials, we can see the lack of theoretical direction in these materials. The study of Chinese for specific purposes is still a new field in China, where as in other countries, the study of languages for specific purposes, especially ESP theory in practice and language for professional uses, is much more mature. Through the research findings of other countries, we will be able to improve the ways of teaching in Chinese for specific purposes (the subject of this paper is "Business Chinese").This paper uses the theoretical grounds of ESP and conduct surveys to examine the targeted population. The results of these surveys are compared with the survey results of the materials, in order to find whether or not the materials meet students' demand, and the areas where improvement is needed in these materials.We've found that the most important problem is in business topic selection. Management communicational activities have not received due attention, while transaction communicational activities chosen by the target materials are not proper as well. There are still some problems in culture contents, such as the lack of explanation in communicational culture and the single boring teaching form. We've also made appraisal of the arrangement of business content of the five materials.The CBI is used here as a guidance on practical solutions.
