Lu Haihuan are an important philanthropist and diplomat in late Qing Dynasty.His practice and thoughts of charity have had a profound impact on the development of philanthropy of modern Chinese society.Researches on his practice and thoughts of charity not only have academic value of broadening and deepening the study of the history of modern philanthropy in China,but also have a very strong practical significance.The reasons why Lu Haihuan was committed to charity are of three.First,there is a profound social and historical background,particularly,the frequent wars and economic decline of that age;Second,Lu Haihuan's heritage of charitable thoughts of traditional Chinese culture,and third, the impact of Western charities e on Lu Haihuan.Lu Haihuan charitable activities mainly happened in his latter half of his life,that is from the year 1894,in which he was appointed government official in Jiangsu Province to the year1927,in which he passed away.His experience of charity can be divided into two stages.The former is before 1904,it is a period that he was engaged in traditional philanthropy;the latter is after 1904,it is a period that he was engaged in modernizing philanthropy;Lu Haihuan's charitable practice and thoughts are of positive historical significance and have had profound influence on Chinese society.It can be known in four aspects: first,his charitable practice and thoughts have promoted the emergence,development,and growth of the Red Cross in China; Second,they have also promoted the modernization of the traditional charitable venture;Third,they have given rise to the humanitarian spirit,and have played a good moral model role; Fourth,to some extent,they have relieved the sufferings of the masses and social upheavals.
