Content: The language using in Hong Kong and in Mainland are developed from Chinese system, they share same characters. The language using in Hong Kong belongs to Cantonese that is one of the seven biggest dialects of Chinese, and has specialty of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Even compared with Cantonese using in Guangzhou province, Cantonese using in Hong Kong has its own characteristics. This phenomenon is not alone. Vocabulary system is an important part of the language system and it shows directly the development and changes of the language. The comparison of two vocabulary systems can better interpret the phenomenon. Many scholars and experts have done studies regarding different aspects of this phenomenon. From the references I have, there are several topics that have been studied a lot by scholars. These paper summaries the achievements of other scholars and focus on the comparison of the vocabulary using in Hong Kong and in Mainland.The paper uses theories and methods of linguistics and lexicography. Through the comparison of the two vocabulary systems, we are able to find out the similarities and differences between the two systems. In the paper, there are several main topics. First is the review on the results of related studies. The paper lists different features of those components and discusses the result of comparison of vocabulary using in Hong Kong and in Mainland. Secondly, the developmental history, the current situation, the cause of formation, and the shifting trend all describe the big picture of the two systems. The paper also explores how we could cope with changes of the two vocabulary systems, and how we could participate to develop a regular system of adopting and cleaning words. This study is relevant new in the field. Hopefully, the paper could offer a guideline of the follow scholars; the paper can also prove unification of two languages in Chinese development.
