Poetry, music and dance, the three primitive art forms were mixed together at the beginning. After the emergence of characters, poetry and music gradually separated. Based on the articles of "Ming Shi" and "Yue Fu" in WENXINDIAOLONG, the author discussed the relations and differences of poetry and music based on the evolution courses of poetry and song. Poetry originated from lyrics, and its composition as well as dissemination both depended on music, until poetry stepped onto its independent developing path in the Han dynasty. This doesn't mean poetry has completely gotten rid of the music's influence, because the rhythm of music is hidden behind the rhythm of language, aiming to gain an inner harmony of both elements. Poetry and song also vary in terms of transmission ways and appreciation objects. Under the contemporary cultural transition background in China, Chinese poetry, deeply influenced by the Confucianist tradition, is not supposed to undertake excessive political function. After all, poetry's essence lies in its esthetic attribute. The Chinese modern poetry would obtain a better development in both length and style by recognizing the relations and differences between poetry and song.
