The May Fourth Movement is a distinct point in time in the advancement of Chinese art songs. The transition from school music songs,to art songs, was made possible by a group of composers engaged in the music business who attempted to fuse Chinese and Western composition theories to create songs, influenced by Western music composition techniques, and Chinese composers fused poetry and music in their compositions. The subject of this paper is the Chinese art song "Song" and "Lei ci" composed by Zhang Rui of the composition department of Tianjin Conservatory of Music, which are included in "The Joy of Snowflakes-A Collection of Zhang Rui’s Art Songs",with Chinese lyrics translated by Xu Zhimo,a famous modern poet in China. The original poem of the art song "Song" was composed by the famous English poetess Christina Rorty, and the original poem of "Lei ci" was written by the modern poet Matthew Arnold. In this paper,we will analyze these two works by combining the author’s singing practice and taking "Song" and "Lei ci",which were sung in the graduation concert,as the objects of study. This paper is divided into four main parts:the first part introduces the background of the composition, the author of the original poem, the author of the translated poem and the composer of the piece;the second part analyzes the art song"Song" and "Lei ci" ontologically and familiarizes with the composition structure of the piece;the third part is the main part of the paper, focusing on the analysis of the"poem-music relationship" to The third part is the main part of the essay, focusing on the analysis of "poetic and musical relationship",taking "poetic composition" and"musical composition" as the entry point, interpreting "the beauty of musicality in poetry, and the beauty of poeticity in musicality",and interpreting the "one song, three sighs" theory embodied in the work. The last part is related to the author’s actual singing, which is based on "singing technique","singing emotion" and "grasping the’poetry and music’ in singing".The last part is related to the author’s actual singing, and analyzes the work from the directions of "singing technique","singing emotion"and "grasping the mood of ’poetry and music’ in singing",hoping to get some new singing ideas to better serve the work, and also hoping to provide some new inspiration and direction for the study and research of the later.
