A Study On The Female Figure In The Novels And Movies Of Su Tong

In the end of 1980, Revolution of Chinese society brought about consciousness change of people. And the contemporary literature of China has contained the change of the era since the new period. Su Tong who was one of Chinese Avant-garde in this Chinese literary world has come into the spotlight by many readers and critics. This is due to his strong influence on Chinese emotions. He showed the emotions of the Chinese south of a river and always tried to find the new directions in his works.Among his works,"Wives and Concubines","HONGFEN", and"Woman's Life"are the novels whose writing materials are women. They show us the traditional style of writing rather than the descriptive style of writing. Su Tong has been acknowledged as a writer with these novels. In these works, he described his female figure. Traditionally, woman has been treated as core source of writing materials and she often has been characterized as a tragic hero. However, we could see the different interpretation. Contradiction and friction among women are the major factors in his works instead of cooperation among women and common resistance against a male-dominated society. What he focused is woman's survival situation and the factor of woman itself, not social factors. In his works, woman's weak point and defect are well described.In other words, history and human nature that are condensed in woman itself catch the eye due to relations among women. Su Tong had a good grip on woman's mental state and described woman's survival state in a series of misfortunes. Because such led to another idea for woman, his works came into the spotlight by the motion-picture world. Due to following the fashion of reorganized films at that time and Su Tong's himself factors, All his three novels,"Wives and Concubines","HONGFEN", and"Woman's Life", were done into movies. It created a sensation both in the literary world and in the film world. And this success of the reorganized films played important role in a matter of introducing his works. Now nobody could deny Su Tong's close relation to movie. With this reason, the female figure and his reorganized films are the center of research on Su Tong. During the transition from novels to movies, motion-picture works create new space of work and specially the change of character figure is unavoidable.In this thesis, with reference to Su Tong's both the novels whose writing materials are women and the reorganized movies, comparing the female figures in both novels and films, we study Su Tong's psychological description of the female figure and new discovery in the movies. With comparative analysis on female figures in both the Su Tong's novels and the reorganized movies, we could find out that Su Tong and movie directors were paying attention to woman's humanity and survival situation through the similarities and differences. Also all of these give a chance to look back over woman herself and see the right way.
