China English: A Translational Bridge Between Chinese And English

China English is neither Chinese Pidgin English nor Chinglish. China English is the kind of English that carries Chinese characteristics but conforms to the normative English. It is used exclusively to describe the unique things of China. Due to language vacancy in English, translators create China English in Chinese-English translation. We call for the need of China English.Adopting foreignization and skopos theories, the author in this paper probes into the role China English plays in Chinese-English translation. Foreignizing translation is a term used by Lawrence Venuti, an Italian American translation theorist to designate the type of translation in which a target text is produced which deliberately breaks target conventions by retaining something of the foreignness of the original. China English belongs to the method of foreignization. According to the skopos theory, it is the intended purpose of the target text that determines the translation methods and strategies. In order to promote cultural communication, translators should provide more chances for readers to approach the source culture. Through China English, by introducing Chinese cultural elements, which are embodied in it, readers get more opportunities to get in touch with China. Thus, the paper will begin with the definition of China English. Then the author analyses the formation of China English and examines the history of it. At last, the author concludes by discussing the significance of China English. It is found out that China English is generated from cross-cultural communications between Chinese and English and is indispensable and beneficial to the dissemination of Chinese culture. It not only bridges over the lexical gap between the Chinese and English language, but also promotes the communication between China and the English world. It is hoped that this paper will arouse more attention to China English and Chinese-English translation study.
