A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Red Star Over China(Part 10-11)

In recent years,the Communist Party of China has vigorously advocated the inheritance and promotion of the Long March spirit.As one of the most legendary feats in the history of Chinese revolution,the Long March spirit can be carried forward with the help of red classics.Edgar Snow's Red Star Over China can be a great book to understand and learn the spirit of the Long March.Hence,the author of this report,guided by the Skopos theory,deals with flexibly the translation strategies and methods after having an understanding and analysis of the source text,and knowing well the differences between the two languages.By doing that,the original text is reproduced in a faithful and an accurate manner for increasing the readability of the target text and it is conducive to spreading the spirit of the Long March.Skopos theory holds that three principles should be followed by all translators:the “skopos rule”,“coherence rule” and “fidelity rule”,while the first rule is the“skopos rule”,which determines translation methods and strategies.Guided by Skopos theory,the author of this report analyzes how translation methods and strategies are appropriately used on lexical,syntactic and rhetorical levels,so as to meet the needs of target readers.In terms of vocabulary,the author of this report adopts such translation techniques as semantic extension,conversion of parts of speech,domestication and turning phrases into clauses,which make the translation smooth and in line with the expression of the target language.With respect to sentence,in order to achieve the desired purpose,the author of this report flexibly uses different translation methods,such as negation and affirmation,amplification and omission,the change of voice,adjusting the syntactic order.On the rhetorical level,the author of this report mainly uses literal translation and free translation to deal with some rhetorical devices like simile,metaphor,parallelism and hyperbole in the original text.By using these translation methods and strategies on lexical,syntactic and rhetorical levels,the purpose of translation is realized,and the translation is more acceptable to readers in modern times.Through this practice,the author of this report accumulates a lot of translation experience and historical knowledge,conducive to better translation of similar texts in the future.
