In the modern times, archaeologists have discovered some leather fragments of the slippers of the people lived in the low countries during the late Middle Ages. The reason for the slippers ever made by these fragments being called"Tristan Slippers"lies in the fact that in the pictures created on these slippers an important figure—a man named"Tristan"—was specially observed and that in the name of him the slippers have been accepted. There is a need to notice that"Tristan Slippers"are not a group of meaningless materials but a category of symbol which has a deep cultural meaning; what they symbolize is the very significant change of the idea of love and marriage of the people, more specifically the urban middle classes, in the low countries in the late medieval times—about from the 13th to the 15th century. It was in such a context that the author will spread her narrative and analysis in the following paragraphs.More specifically, the content of this paper includes three major parts:The foreword briefly introduces the present situation of the research in this sphere and the basic problems which will be dealt with in the paper, such as the concept of"Tristan Slippers", the social context in which the slippers had been made, and et al.The central part is made up of three sub-parts. One is mainly about the traditional idea of love and marriage of the people in the medieval low countries and the other, as the other two parts of major importance in the paper, makes a particular illustration to the material forms of"Tristan Slippers"and provides a multi-dimension analysis of the cultural meaning of them. The conclusion puts an end to the text, pointing out that the deeper cultural meaning of"Tristan Slippers"is the very significant change of the idea of love and marriage of the people who lived as the urban middle classes in the low countries in the late Middle Ages, more specifically the period from the 13th to the 15th century.
