Fran(?)oise Sagan ( 1935—2004 ) is the famous exoteric novelist in the contemporary French. She was born in middle class and wrote middle class. And she used"Sadness"as a second name which revealed the life fickleness and mental nihility in French middle class after the world warⅡ. RenéEtiemble, the French contemporary comparative literature scholar, points out that"coca cola and Fran?oise Sagan"are the two social diseases of their times. Taking the"Sadness of Sagan"as a breakthrough point, this dissertation makes a chronological contrast among the"Sadness"of"the child of the century"and that of the"Outsider", analyzes the external representation, the causes of the"Sadness of Sagan", and the life attitude of Sagan who faces"Sadness", then reveals the characteristics of"Sadness"of Sagan's novel. The characters that created by Sagan all live in middle class families, however they lost their life belief and struggling goal. They take the love as the only reasonable stuff in the world, and are desperate for the exciting moments in irrational multiple love, and try to get away from the boredom of living. However, they feel the boring of themselves and others even more deeply, and reveal even more loneliness, indifference, and anxiety.First of all, the"Sadness of Sagan"is the product of the time. The 1950's is an age of ideological end. The conflicts between capitalism economy and culture conduce the values hypogenesis of this generation. The mental blankness and boredom are raw portrayal of the young middle class. This generation views Sartre and Camus who are existentialism as mental tutors. And with the guidance of Sartre's philosophy of free choice, the middle class people in Sagan's novel frequently initiate challenge towards traditional morality. At the same time, they are still fostered by traditional bourgeoisie culture and morality. They are always full of sympathy and lament to the culture and morality that are fading away, thus the"Sadness"definitely becomes cost on their road striving for freedom. Furthermore, Sagan is abnormally sensitive to time. From her point of view, the only reliable thing is death, which will make everything turn to nothingness as soon as it occurs. Therefore, the middle class people in her novels no longer insist in looking for the meaning of living, and her writing represent intense nihilism. The middle class in Sagan's novel choose to enjoy the worldly happiness so as to getting away from the"Sadness". Facing with the choices of significance and meaninglessness, freedom and responsibility, They always choose to live in meaningless and insignificant life, because they are trying to avoid thinking about some serious problems like profound sensation, serious reflection, value of life, and responsibility. This is the unique point of"Sagan's Sadness". At the same time, it is a paradox—the consuming society nurtures her"Sadness"like a breeding ground, nevertheless, she lies on it to enjoy playing with the"Sadness"happily. To assort with the lightly aesthetics gusto of"Sadness", Sagan's writing of"Sadness"represents the style of tranquility and abstention. The mental description in her novel is profound and elaborate. The circular narrative structure of starting point—end—origin is represents the life nihility. And the combination of content and format demonstrates the outstanding art capacity of Sagan.
