Fran?oise Sagan is one of the most famous women writers in modern France. Sagan`s novels are all about the love affairs of the petite bourgeoisie, it reflects modern people's distress and sorrow after their love games and indulgence. Seemingly, her novels may look superficial. But in fact, her novels show readers a sad picture of the modern individual`s confusion and empty in mind and spirit, which is caused by the surge of desire. This paper regards the desire theme as the breakthrough point. It takes Bataille`s desire theory as the guidance to analyze the individual behavior and spiritual dilemma of novel characters in Sagan`s works,which is initiated by the pursuit of desire.This paper consists of five parts. The introduction is about Sagan`s novel creation, research situation at home and abroad of Sagan,and the research contents and significance of this paper. Chapter One is to explain Bataille`s desire theory, and the feasibility and significance of applying the theory to the analysis of Sagan`s novels. Bataille`s desire theory not only worship the realization of desire, but also affirm the existence of punishment. This point may account for the tragic ending that Sagan`s novel characters like indulging in desire, but they always descend down the slope of sadness as well. Chapter Two is all about the major desire types of Sagan`s novels. This chapter will focus on analyzing the broken love desire of Sagan`s novel characters, which is coerced by lust and imprisoned by occupation. What`s more, the eager desire for freedom is also explained in this chapter. In addition, this chapter will also analyze the extreme desire for death. Modern individual`s pursuit of desire is doomed to failure and tragedy. Chapter Three puts emphasis on the representation skills of Sagan`s novel characters` desire. For example, the artistic methods of using interior monologue, the image of animal and children, music and tranquillizer will be analyzed deeply. Chapter Four is to expound the modern significance of Sagan`s desire writing. Sagan`s desire writing is not only a portrayal of her own life, but also a projection of the time she lived. Her desire writing embodies the tragedy of modern individual`s pursuit of desire in this fanaticizing consumption ageIt enriches the theoretical perspective of Sagan study by using Bataille`s desire theory to elucidate the Theme of Desires in Sagan`s novels. It is worth researching. Simultaneously,Sagan`s novels seem to caution us: In the modern society which favours business and consumption, if we are too addicted to creature comforts and desires, if we abandon our faith and beliefs, we will be lost and empty both mentally and spiritually. We need to control and manage our desire rationally, and pay close attention to the mental abundance and spiritual joy.
