Researches On The Explanations Of Range Adverbs In Modern Chinese Dictionary

The Modern Chinese Dictionary (MCD for short) has been recognized as the authoritative dictionary which won more and more attention in the academia. The scholars performed extensive researches on it ,such as the compilation of the formats, the acceptance of the words and the explanation of the words. This paper takes 130 range adverbs(among the marking adverbs) listed in the MCD as the object of research to study the classification, the explanation and the matching examples. Meanwhile, the author attempts to summarize the regular things which may be useful for compiling the dictionary as well as the revision of MCD in future.The introduction of the paper outlines the study of explanation in MCD and the basic research of range adverbs. The first chapter is mainly about the identification of range adverbs and the sub-classification of the range adverbs in MCD. Meanwhile, the author analyzes the disputed range adverbs"Zai,Hai,You,Ye",concurrent adverbs,the range adverbs with degree of the controversy to the academia. The conclusion is"Zai,Hai,You"belong to the limited range adverbs. There are great differences between concurrent adverbs and rang adverbs on grammar and semantics. The difference is obvious in the explanation of MCD. So the concurrent adverbs are not within the scope of our discussion. The range adverbs with degree limit the amount of the degree, rather than the adjective and verb. So they belong to the range adverbs. The second chapter mainly study the patterns of range adverbs'explanation in MCD, outlining the changes between the fifth edition and the fourth edition as well as summing up the principle of the sense division. Firstly, the author describes the patterns of the range adverbs in MCD which are"the synonym style","the explaining style"and"the synthetical style", summarizing the characteristic of explanation and study the reason that range adverb explanations present the characteristics. Then, comparing the fifth edition and fourth edition, the changes are appeared in range adverbs'explanation. Meanwhile, the author proposes the advice to the deficiency existing in the range adverbs'explanation. Finally,on the basis of the principle of sense division, the author analyzes some range adverbs which are irregular and further point out the editor's flexibility in the treatment of sense division. The third chapter is the study of range adverbs'examples. Firstly, the author describes the"phrase examples"and"sentence examples"of range adverbs in MCD. Then, the author describes the situation of the example of range adverbs'sub-classification. Finally, the author summarizes the principle of the range adverbs'examples. In the end, the author proposes some questions of range adverbs'example in MCD, such as the explanation and the example is not matched and so on.
