Chen Baichen's comedies play an important role in the history of modern Chinese drama. These works have distinct self-consciousness and innovation in pursuing the comic effects. This article use the carnival poetics theory of Mikhail Bakhtin, one of the former USSR literature theorists, to analyze the carnival in Chen Baichen's comedies in three ways: the interrelationship between Chen Baichen's comedies and Bakhtin's carnival theory, the carnival genes on the implication stratum and the carnival elements on the form stratum. Cognizing and understanding these aspects correctly has profound use for reference and revelation for comprehending Chen Baichen's writing practice of comedies and deepening it's theoretical studies.
