CHEN Xiaoying developed comedy aesthetic research from humor which is one of the comedy aesthetic categories. He is the pioneer of modern Chinese comedy in China, and he made outstanding contributions on the subject. He founded the comedy aesthetics, and has made a correct discipline localization for it. He also offered sufficient explanations to prove that the course is reasonable.His comedy aesthetics theory takes the Marxism aesthetics thought as the instruction. In a right understanding of the comedy view of Marxism aesthetics, he promulgated the standpoint and constructed his own comedy aesthetics theory system. First, he made a new explanation to the quality of ugly, in thinking that ugly is the basis of a comedy which is the logical start and the clue through the system. Secondly, he broadened the category of comedy aesthetics and took its inner relations and regulations as the research point when normal research of traditional aesthetics on comedy can not satisfy the people's aesthetics needs. Finally, he chose"humor"and"the affirmative comedy"from the varied comedy aesthetics researches as the breach of his research on the system of comedy aesthetics theory.His achievements on comedy theory was embodied in two overlapped researches as humor and comedy. The biggest contribution of his comedy aesthetics studies lies in: a new comedy aesthetics discipline was founded and the research on the basic theory of comedy aesthetics was broadened, which has a vital significance in advancing the development of the comedy aesthetics in China; a historical relationship between comedy and the other aesthetics aspects was uncovered and a multi-dimensional method was employed to study aesthetics, which is inspiring and innovative. His research pointed out that aesthetic study goes into category study, especially into the study of comedy category, which is a new bright road for the aesthetics research in China. However, CHEN Xiaoying's comedy aesthetics research certainly has its own limitations, such as the lack of aesthetics altitude, the special originality with insufficient grounds and the shortcoming of the methodology etc.
