From abundance of ethnography, we have known that every human culture has its certain forms of drawing in history. Drawing has diverse functions, forms and expressions.It is the way we observe art that decide the mode and horizon of our study. When composing and appreciating is not at the same time or situation, the significance of cultural factors of paintings in idiographic esthetic analysis is emerged. When we are facing an unacquainted Bimo Drawing of Yi, the traditional paradigm of Art research is challenged. Because we can merely appreciate it's simply primitiveness and its mysteriousness but can not reach a further understanding. If we merely pay attention to the aesthetic psychoanalysis but ignore the intellectual cognition and cultural questioning to the object, it is bound to misunderstanding. In order to understand the Bimo Drawing of Yi, firstly, we should know where and when it has been produced and what behavior or phenomenon it refers to; Further more, we need to know these inherent elements of paintings such as materials, forms, languages, subjects and connotations and so on, which are the embodiments of a sort of systemic symptoms of a culture. Eventually, basing on these facts, we have to find out different inscapes of beauty in idiographic study, and its essentials of likelihood of developing and changing.This dissertation is based on on-the-spot investigation many a time in Liangshan Yi nationality autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province. The straight matter is composed of four parts. The first part is to introduce the investigation background; The second part presents the education of Bimo Drawing and the occasions of usage and manners of Bimo Drawing, and also analyzes the status of these pictures in Yi's cultural structure. The third part trys to apply the method of Iconography to do a research in forms and meanings of Bimo Drawing. Investigating the forms of Bimo Drawing, it takes into account the record from emic perspective, and it also attaches importance of integrative study from etic perspective; Researching the meaning of Bimo Drawing, it not only involves the identification of image's natural attribute but also involves the explanation of image's connotation in Yi culture; In the fourth part, the author takes a broad view on the contemporary contexts and concerns different opinions about Bimo Drawing from different people. Meanwhile, it pays attention to that forms and meanings of Bimo Drawing are developing and changing, and that Bimo Drawing is connected with the ethnic group expressing.Through a case study of Yi in Meigu County, this dissertation starts with Art, and returns the Art to the original condition. So we can better understand the language and symbolization of Bimo Drawing. Bimo Drawing can be seen as a kind of human behavior which bears an important relation to a society or culture, as well as a medium which is an evocative of experiencing and expressing among different crowds. Therefore, this study has made a breakthrough above the previous plain descriptions of Folk Art. Besides, in appendix, the arrangement of iconography and description of various genres about Bimo Drawing have basal significance to the study.
