| Film subtitles translation is a branch of audiovisual translation and is innately related to cross-cultural study. Translating a text from one culture to another usually requires that a choice first be made between two basic translation strategies: domestication and foreignization. Through the analysis of the translated subtitles of Chinese Blockbusters, the author finds that domestication is preferred in the subtitling. This thesis attempts to adopt Skopostheorie to guide the analysis of the subtitle translation. According to the Skopostheorie, film subtitle translation is a purposeful activity with a regular assignment to convey, within the constraints of time and space, the intention of the director and producer by providing the most relevant information to the audience in a specific culture. The specific Skopos is up to each film, which leads to the particular strategy. This is the application of Skopos Rule in film subtitle translation. This thesis will explore the reason why domestication strategy is frequently applied in Chinese Blockbusters' subtitles translation from four aspects: the genre of the film, the Skopos of subtitling, the director's intention and the target-language audience's expectation. |
