Report On The Translation Of Chinese Domestic Documentary Subtitles From The Perspective Of Domestication And Foreignization

With China’s deepening reform and opening up and the fast development of globalization,people’s communication around the world is much closer than ever before.Our understanding of western culture has been deepened as a great quantity of western documentaries flow into China,which shows the vital significant meaning and profound influence of films and television works.The raising China’ international status makes it important to spread China’s culture and national image so as to let the world know the real China.In order to let the world understand the Chinese culture and its values and ideas in the progress of globalization,subtitle translation is particularly important.At present,the studies of subtitle translation in China are limited in television programs or films.In contrast,documentary subtitle translation volume is small,and this kind of translation are mostly from English to Chinese.Generally speaking,China’s documentary subtitle translation lacks of authoritative guidance,theoretical guidance and quality audit.There are always problems including mistranslation and missed translation due to cultural differences or personal understanding of some expression.Eugene A.Nida said “translation is an exchange between two cultures.For a real successful translation,knowing two cultures is more important than grasping two languages.” This report,based on domestication and foreignization,studies the difficulties caused by culture,history and geography,and find ways to solve these problems in subtitle translation of Chinese domestic documentary “The Memory of Hometown”.I hope it can provide a case for the study of subtitle translation of domestic documentary.
