This dissertation studies the motivation of root-compound words in modern Chinese as its object, investigating it diachronically and comprehensively. Based on the explanation of the motivation, this dissertation starts its own way from the four aspects, namely, to trace the original meaning of words, restore the original forms of words, clarify the morphemes, and logical relevance, and make a comprehensive, scientific and reasonable observation on the motivation of root-compound words. After that, the author divides motivation into four types: characteristic, rhetorical, allusive and condensing, with a general analysis of the features of root-compound words'motivation. In the circle of teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL), more and more scholars focus their attention to launch an ontological research on modern Chinese along with TCFL practice, and try hard to put the research achievement into practice as soon as possible. Under such kind of background, this dissertation focuses its attention on applying the motivation research of root-compound words into TCFL. Therefore, in the last chapter the author makes a detailed inquiry on the practice of lexical, syntactical and cultural teaching within the motivation of root-compound words, expecting to bring some advice and benefits to the teaching in terms of the motivation of words.
