Objective: To investigate the mental health status of primary and middle school students in Suzhou and the effect factors of mental health.Methods: Symptom Checklist 90,Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist and Family Environment Scale were used to survey 7275 primary and middle school students in Suzhou. The data were analyzed with SPSS software package.Results: The scores of Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist of urban children were higher than that of rural children, and the scores of boys were higher than that of girls. The scores of cohesion,expressiveness,achievement orientation and intellectual-culture orientation in Family Environment Scale for children with behavioral problems were lower than that of controls, the scores of conflict for children with behavior problems were higher than that for controls.The scores of interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation, psychoticism and total scale scores in the parents of children with ethological problems were higher than that of controls. The mean total scores for Symptom Checklist 90 of adolescents were different between urban districts and rural areas, higher than Chinese norm of total scores for Symptom Checklist 90.The prevalence rate of mental problem in adolescents was different for the factors of Symptom Checklist 90. The scores of the nine factors constituting Symptom Checklist 90 in adolescents were higher than those in Chinese norm. The scores of cohesion, expressiveness and conflict in Family Environment Scale were related to the states of mental health in adolescents .The results of logistic regression analysis showed that learning press, relation with the teachers and peers, teacher's attitudes , cohesion and conflict in family ,were the factors of risk resulting inmental problems.Conclusions: The prevalence rates of mental problems in children and adolescents werehigher, compared with common population. The family psyche environment might be afactor of effects on mental problems in children and adolescents, and the importance offamily environment must be paid attention to for the treatment of children and adolescentswith mental problems.
