Analysis Of The Influence Of American Cultural Hegemonism On Chinese Cultural Security

With the conclusion of the Cold War, politics, economy and military affairs have become less influential in international relations; while culture plays an increasingly important role in international relations. The revolution of information transmission technology renders inter-cultural communication more convenient and frequent than ever before. The rapid economic development accelerates China's communication with the world. Reflected in culture, this change brings new opportunities and challenges to the cultural safety of our country.America is advanced in economy, science and technology, which enables it to preserve and realize its interest by cultural devices in foreign affairs. The victory in the Cold War further assures America of the superiority of its social political system and cultural values; it takes spreading western democratic system and values as a component of its national interest. Invading and infiltrating other countries culturally, America actively carries out cultural hegemony in an attempt to make other countries accept and identify with its political system, ideology and values. As the biggest socialist country in the world, China naturally becomes the major aim of America's cultural hegemony. In recent years, the cultural communication between China and America enjoys stable development and the people in both countries have had a better understanding of each other. However, due to cultural differences, the existence of ideological influence, as well as the difference of national interest, cultural conflicts will exist for a long time in Sino-American relations. Owing to the great gap between China and America in comprehensive national power, in the cultural conflict between Chinese traditional culture and American advantageous culture, the latter still gets the upper hand. Therefore, America's cultural hegemony constitutes a great threat to our national safety. In face of American cultural hegemony in the new age, we should thoroughly study it and be fully aware of the threat it exerts on our cultural safety, and formulate corresponding strategies of our cultural safety to protect our cultural interest.This paper consists of four parts. Part one elaborates the concepts of cultural hegemony and national cultural safety and analyzes the relationship between them. Part two introduces the historical reason and realistic basis of American cultural hegemony and discloses its essence on the basis of its representations. Part three mainly analyzes the present situation of our cultural safety under the influence of American cultural hegemony. It points out that our cultural safety is confronted with serious threat analyzes briefly the reason of the long cultural conflict between China and America. Part four, based on the analysis above, puts forward preliminary strategies confronting American cultural hegemony and protecting Chinese cultural safety.
