In the muical history of ancient China, all the temperament researchers of successive dynasties have made constant exploration and effort to solve the problem that Huangzhong can not retore and twelve lu can not be Gong rotating respectively with the method of decreasing or increasing one-third. "Eighteen Ltl" Theory , known as "Cai YuanDing' Eightee Lu", namely doing twelve lu deriving from the decreasing or increasing one-third before going on six lu, was called "Varied Lu" by Cai Yuanding of Sonth Song Dynasties (1135-1198) in his "New BookonLU Temperament" six varied lu more comma maxima (24 cents) than six primary lu respectively. Depite as not solving the problem of coming back the original Lu , the 18 lu system that canrealize 12 lu deriving from the decreasing or increasing one-third maycoordinate with it in some degrees, which has great value at that time.On the basis of the document of 'New Book on Lu Temperament' itself, to its original work, we are going to carry on te detailed revision, annotation and brief and superficial analysis, pursuing its therical source of "the 18 lu", in the meantime, looking upon it in the whole process of Chinese temperament. We also admit its contributiong in the following aspects solving the theorical problem of rotating Gong and key with the method of decreasing or increasing one-third; getting rid of mysterious custom—being confused in the issue of astronomy almanac and Lu in the past days, recognizing the important position of Cai Yuanding in the development of Chinese Lu course.
