| Humanists have paid a lot of attention to the relationship between language and gender. But gender study of language in China is confined within the theory of western gender study. The study is just focused on the introduction of western theory, with the foreign languages as the main materials. And thus there is a lack of complete and thorough study and description of gender difference in Chinese language as well as a lack of a contrastive study between Chinese and foreign language. On the basis of concrete observation and analysis of langauge materials, this thesis tries to choose two contemporary writings as its language materials, namely, One Half is the Flame and the other Seawater by Wang Shuo, a male writer and Nowere to Say Farewell by Chen Ran, a female writer. The materials are dividied into such three kinds as character language, narrative language, and descriptive language. In the perspective of vocabulary and pragmatics, the comparison is made between the different types of language for the purpose of exposing the gender difference in written Chinese and further understanding the commonness and individuality of two genders in the expression of written Chinese. |
