The Belgian Pragmaticist Jef Verschueren(1999) has advanced a new pragmatic theory--Adaptation Approach, which is one of the most practical pragmatic theories. This thesis is intended for the study of pun translation under the guidance of Adaptation Approach and its application in pun translation practice.According to Adaptation Approach, variability, negotiability and adaptability are three basic properties of language. Variability and negotiability are the foundation, and adaptability is the result, which enables human beings to make negotiable linguistic choices from a variable range of possibilities in such a way as to approach points of satisfaction for communication needs. Making contextual correlates of adaptability is the core of pun translation. Based on Adaptation Approach, using language must consist of consciously or unconsciously choice-making, for language-internal, and/or language-external reasons, namely, the process of translating pun is to make proper language form from target language, which adapts to both source and target text. This thesis is trying to build up a pun translation model and investigate the translator's language use from a pragmatic perspective. We divide the objects of adaptation into two categories: linguistic adaptation and extra-linguistic adaptation. In practice, the decision-making goes through the entire process of translating pun.
