Language exercises, which plays an important role in the second-language education, is also an indispensable part of the language teaching materials. Previously, due to the lack of importance attached to the researches in language exercises, the study, however, had always been a subject only integrated into the researches in teaching materials. In such case, exercise is not fairly valued in accordance with its significance. Currently, the non-standardized setup of exercises in the Chinese language teaching materials indicates the urgency of conducting the related researches as well.The purpose of this article is to delve into the problems with the rationale behind the setup of exercises in teaching materials. The article believes that there is some close relationship between the language exercises system and the teaching methodology of teaching materials.Moreover, the article also selects several sets of representative teaching materials in various periods down the line, and establishes a multi-dimensional framework of analysis. In addition, the article also carries out comprehensive studies and analyses on the exercises systems of these teaching materials on the basis of the four relevant factors in setting up the exercises, namely, exercise intensity, exercise frequency, exercise setup, and exercise format. Finally, based on the current trend of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the article summarizes four principles that ought to be followed when drawing up the exercise system for teaching.
