On The Contrastive Studies Of Chinese And English Versions Of The PRC Law On Administrative Licenses

The present thesis probes the characteristics of legal document translation by means of the contrastive studies of Chinese and English versions of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Administrative Licenses. It consists of five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction to the Law of the People's Republic of China on Administrative Licenses (hereinafter referred to as LPRCAL), dealing with the general background knowledge of LPRCAL, the significance of the contrastive studies of Chinese and English versions of LPRCAL, and the approaches of the contrastive studies of both versions of LPRCAL. The following chapter is a survey of legal English from the grammatical perspective with a view to analyzing the most prominent grammatical features of legal English. In this chapter, the author conducts an overall study on the stylistic, lexical and syntactic levels. In accordance with various theories and criteria of translation, the author makes an attempt to recommend specific criteria for legal document translation, which are impartiality, accuracy and appropriateness. And in Chapter Three, attention is focused on the main body of this thesis, that is, the lexical characteristics of legal English. In this chapter, the author carries out the contrastive study of two C-E versions of LPRCAL of the lexical characteristics in nine aspects, including the origin of legal lexicon.
