On Kumarajiva's Sutra Translation Theory And Practice

Translation theory is always the main topic in academic field. Kumarajiva(Jiva for short) and Xuan Zang made the utmost contributions to the ancient translation history of China. To develop the ancient translation study and to find the origin of the translation source, simultaneously to penetrate into the ancient cultural inheritance, we should pay much attention to Jiva's translation theory. On the basis of consulting lots of ancient works, this thesis mainly discusses Jiva's translation theory—flavour theory. And it provides a clear clue to translation theory of our country, which is based on the advancement and development of it.In addition, it sets the rules for translation according to flavour theory. Last but important, the thesis gives the assurances about flavour theory as the translation guiding principle, through comparing three classic sutra's version.In the first chapter, it mainly studies on Jiva's life experience. On the basis of many scholars and historical books'conclusion, the writer tries to give more acceptable record and viewpoint on Jiva's life.In the second chapter, it talks about how the concept--"flavour"evolutes in both Chinese and Indian artistic field. Furthermore, it studies on what the real meaning of Kumarajiva's flavour theory is. Moreover, the thesis explains that where, when and why Kumarajiva commented on"flavour."In the third chapter, it deals with Kumarajiva's translation practice. On this basis, it gives assurances on flavour theory's effectiveness. The chapter and the above one is the main body of this topic. So they are written in detail.In chapter four, it focuses on Kumarajiva's contribution to the sinicization(佛教中国化) of Buddhism. As for his translation, his theory and his excellent insight on Buddhism, Kumarajiva could be respected as pioneer in the process of sinicization(佛教中国化) of Buddhism.In chapter five, it deals with flavour theory's whole evolution process in Chinese translation field. Through many scholars'contribution, flavour theory has become a special factor in translation theory studying.
