Buddhist sutra translation, which has developed for over thousands of years, opened the study on Chinese translation. It has experienced four phases, each of which had its own features. The first chapter explores the origin of Buddhist sutra translation and sums up the mentioned four phases. The first phase started from Eastern Han Dynasty and ended in the Western Jin Dynasty. The second phase was from the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Sui Dynasty. The third phase of the Tang Dynasty saw the flourishing of Buddhist sutra translation and in the last phase of the Song Dynasty, Buddhist sutra translation came to the vanishing period. On the basis of the above summary, features in each phase is analyzed.The thesis has interpreted Chinese ancient Buddhist sutra translation in view of axiology, the practical theory in philosophy, by adopting case study. The axiology study has covered a pretty long time in the history. But people's understanding of axiology varied a lot. The study on axiology is summed up in the thesis. It is explained in the thesis as how to define value, the content of axiology study and its classification. The focus is put on the social and cultural value, the linguistic value, the creative value, the historical value, the political value and the aesthetic value. The interpretation of Buddhist sutra translation is suggested by referring to the dichotomy of value, which lays theoretical basis for future study.Chinese ancient Buddhist sutra translation is viewed from the mentioned perspectives. As part of Chinese history, especially as the link of the cultural development, Chinese ancient Buddhist sutra translation has contributed more than a lot. By way of spreading Buddhist scriptures, people's mind was released and they could throw away the fetters in their mind and see the world with broad mind and reasonable thinking. Chinese have achieved a lot in linguistic, historical and aesthetic fields by learning valuable Western culture. In the meanwhile, the six perspectives of reading Buddhist sutra translation could not be isolated but be united together for they influenced each other. In this way, Chinese traditional translation theory are promoted to some extent and new viewpoints are put forward for future discussion.
