| This paper studies the translation development of sacred writings with the cases of Chinese translation of sutra and English translation of the Bible, trying to find out the similarities between them. The history of CTS can be divided into four phases, Wen and Zhi are the two schools that appeared since the beginning of CTS. There are three phases in the history of ETB, and the translators shifted from word-for-word to free translation. Considering the characteristics of sacred writings, the translation ideas and theories were always conservative at the beginning and the translators were required to translate in a word-for-word way. However, with the development of the civilization and society, the religious translation becomes more liberal and secular. This kind of change is a remarkable progress not only for translation itself, but also for human and the society. Despite the differences in languages, the two religious translations in Chinese and English are all manipulated by the same elements generally. The manipulations mainly come from power and ideological elements, and patronage is also very important in the change of the theories. And these manipulations may be the reason why the sacred translation in the East and West shared so much in the developing tendencies. |
