Objective: This thesis intends to provide theoretical and factual basis for formulating policies and taking measures against middle school students' (MSS') unhealthy tendencies in adaptation to society and relevant psychological diseases by evaluating the status quo of MSS' adaptation to society and psychological health and exploring the relevant influencing factors.Methods: Methods Cluster random sampling was carried out in a field survey for 3352 middle school students coming from four grades of six different districts in Shandong province.Results: Inquiry results about the status quo of MSS'psychological health: Compared with their peers, 18.41% MSS think that they are very good in adapting to society; 40.75% MSS think that they are relatively good in adapting to society; 37.56% MSS think that they are mediocre in adapting to society; 2.8% MSS think that they are relatively poor in adapting to society; 0.48% MSS think that they are very poor in adapting to society. The findings show that MSS' ability to adapt to society differs markedly according to whether they are the only child of their parents, their dwelling area, their grades, whether they are resident students, the education background of their parents, their mother's profession, and the economic status of their family. Multi-factor analysis shows that the following factors have important influences on MSS' ability to adapt to society: whether they are the only child of their parents, their grades, the education background of their parents, their mother's profession, and the economic status of their family. The standard adopted is that those that get an aggregate score of 160 or more out of SCL-90 analyses are regarded as having apparent psychological disease symptoms. The total psychological symptom ratio (PSR) of this inquiry is 20%. After careful statistical analysis, the difference in sex, region, and only-child-status is statistically meaningful. The rank of different psychological symptoms according to their PSR is: forced behavior, 25.7%; sensitivity to interpersonal relationship, 22.05%; hostility, 20.30%; stubborn biasedness, 17.07%, depression, 15.40%, worriedness, 14.00%, mental disease, 12.00%, horror, 11.5%, somatization, 10.20%. Among different groups of samples, the level of psychological health is markedly different with forced behavior having the highest PSR and sensitivity to interpersonal relationship, hostility and stubborn biasedness following. Female MSS have more sever psychological problems. The psychological features of male and female MSS are also different. As to grade, senior MSS are more severe than junior MSS. MSS in the countryside are more severe than MSS in the city. Therefore, different measures should be taken to address the psychological problems of different students.Conclusion: This inquiry shows that we cannot be optimistic about MSS' psychological health status and ability to adapt to society. The psychological health in the middle school period is very important for one's whole life. Therefore, to ensure the psychological health of MSS, "burden-lifting" is just one of the many measures that should be taken. The success of this task requires the coordinated efforts of both schools and parents, and finally and most importantly, the active awareness and behavior of MSS. Schools are one of the main parties that have the obligation to protect the physical and psychological wellbeing of students. Schools should strengthen education about physical and psychological health knowledge, and in particular, help students to maintain psychological well-being, establish correct outlook on world and life, and foster broad mind and healthy personality.
