Compare to elementary level, intermediate level of Chinese learning is like a bottleneck, with substantial content and more subjects. Very often students find themselves cease to advance. Students have learned basic grammar rules and accumulated a certain number of vocabularies through the first stage of learning, which have helped them to master the basic skills for daily communication. But how to further improve their ability and get ready for the smooth transition to advanced level is a ticklish problem for most students. That is why we'd call intermediate level a crucial year for a successful Chinese language learner.Exercise is one of the most important parts of second language text books. Classroom teaching is directly influenced by the quality of the exercise of a text book (Lv, Bisong, 1993). Exercise design is a comprehensive item and so is the research of it. The research outcomes of many scholars have showed the importance of in-depth specialized research on this topic. Based on six comprehensive reading text books, the paper makes statistics and analysis on three aspects: exercises intensity, exercises density and exercises layout. Besides, the paper also set up several criterions to make further studies on the effectiveness of scientific design and layout of exercises. Based on the research outcomes, the paper put forward some referential suggestions.The paper consists of five parts. Chapter I is the introduction, which proposes the object, the basic theories, historical review and purpose of research, other than that, it also defines the criterions of analysis. The paper classifies exercises into six teaching element: pronunciation, character, vocabulary, sentence, paragraph and communicative applying. Chapter II and III makes statistics and analysis of the intensity and density of exercises in six text books, and makes comparative analysis of the six teaching elements in the exercise volume and style. The paper sums up the characteristic and proposes its view and suggestion according to these characteristic. Chapter IV studies the exercise structuring model, according to the four criterions (learning pattern, input and output, controllability and communicative applying) it set up, the paper makes further studies on the effectiveness of scientific design and layout of exercises. It summarizes the insufficiency and strong points in terms of exercise design and proposed its suggestions. Chapter V, conclusion, which concludes the factor that influence the exercise design of intermediate comprehensive text books, meanwhile, it indicates the advantages and disadvantages of the research.The paper is designed to offer some inspirations to the exercise design of intermediate comprehensive text books and be helpful to the text book-compiling. What's more, this paper is expected to serve as a modest spur to induce more counterparts to come forward with valuable contributions to this topic.
