This project is base on the fifth network edition of The Revised Edition of Mandarin Chinese Dictionary, combined with the theory of Chinese lexics, lexicology, Chinese lexical statistics and cultural linguistics. It applies many scientific methods, such as database, statistics, contrast of cultural and cultural interpretation. It worked over the Taiwanese toponymy by classification, explore the cultural connotations of Taiwanese toponymy in depth from several levels, to reflect development trajectory that is symbiotic and covariant of Taiwanese language and social culture, complement and enrich the geographical language study.This thesis computationally describe the proper noun as a whole , classing the proper noun of matter in corpus of The Revised Edition of Mandarin Chinese Dictionary to seven sorts: geographical names,race names,astronomical phenomena,historical things,dynasty name,works'name. The study can reach a conclusion that comprise several characteristic of Proper noun in The Revised Edition of Mandarin Chinese Dictionary:realism model or memoir model, pay attention to spatial location and traditional culture. Being the exclusive characteristic of proper noun of matter and geographical names, this project combined the Taiwanese administrative domain names, geographical names of the proper matter noun and place names, study the formation,alteration of place names. What's more, concentrated historical and socio-cultural traces can be excavated. Place name, the proper noun in vocabulary of a language, as a cultural phenomenon, is the result of human cognition, collecting mode of thinking and psychological traits of human being. The research of the relations between place names and culture is content in studying cultural linguistics. This article undertakes to discover the cultural connotation of place from the relations among Taiwanese place names, modes of thinking and social psychology.As a conclusion, six prominent characteristics of naming of Taiwanese place name are drew:1. Place names is named for the character of Chinese visualize thoughtway.2. Naming for expressing subjective desire of persons who named the place.3. Prefer to natural number when naming, which is consistent with the tradition ofthe Han nationality.4.
