Translation Examined Through The Adaptation Theory And Its Implications For Translation Practice

Translation studies are closely associated with the development of other subjects and have been keeping assimilating nutriment from other scientific theories. The combination and association of theories from different fields facilitates the establishment and construction of translatology. Because of the complexity of translation activity, the diversity of research projects and the discrepancy between relevant theoretical origins, a hierarchy of universally acknowledged theories concerning translation studies is still not established up and well. The status quo of translation studies indicates that our research on translation is not sufficient; and the task of more investigations in depth is urgent besides the theoretical assimilation from . other sciences.After several decades of development, Pragmatic theories are being applied to language teaching, language acquisition, translation, cross-cultural communication and artificial intelligence, with their function, theoretical, direction and instruction recognized by more researchers. Pragmatic competence is now considered as one component of language competence (the other being organizational competence). Achievements acquired in pragmatic research are presenting systematic approaches to translation studies and advancing the disciplinary establishment and methodological flourishment of translatology.In his Understanding Pragmatics, Jef Verschueren, Secretary-General of the International Pragmatics Association, introduced to us the Linguistic Adaptation Theory, which approaches to language use from a new angle. According to the theory, using language must consist of the continuous making of linguistic choices, consciously or unconsciously, at any level of linguistic form: phonetic/phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, semantic, etc. The theory serves as an effective tool for our research on translation.
