With the further development of globalization, more and more people begin to pursue different culture experience to enrich their knowledge of the world and enjoy themselves.Driven by this motivation, tourism becomes people’s first choice. In 2013,Chinese leader Xi creatively put forward The Belt and Road Initiative, which significantly facilitated the cooperation of the countries involved in this initiation and laid a good foundation for the tourism development among these areas.Italy, situated at the end of The Silk Road, attracts many Chinese.Rome, the capital of ancient Roman Empire, which greatly influenced the formation and development of modern Europe,is an important destination for tourists, where they can experience the glamorous exotic culture and taste delicious food. So,a specific and high-quality translation guidebook for travelling to Rome is needed. It can not only provide convenience for tourists, but also improve the inter-communication level among different countries. The Monocle Travel Guide Series: Rome is a new guidebook and it hasn’t been published in Chinese version at home.It provides some fresh perspectives of Rome and introduces architecture, customs, food and culture in Rome, which helps us to learn more about Rome. What’s more,it is a good material to study the western civilization. We will have a good command of the difference between two civilizations by reading it.According to adaptation theory proposed by Verschueren, language use is a continuous process of making choice.Language is characterized by three properties, namely, variability, negotiability and adaptability. On the basis of adaptability,it approaches the language adaptation from four angles: the contextual correlates of adaptability, the structural objects of adaptability, the dynamics of adaptability and the salience of the adaptation processes.Adaptation theory can efficiently and scientifically explain and guide the tourism translation activities and provide theoretical guidance to tourism translation. This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report on a guidebook.Based on translation practice of The Monocle Travel Guide Series: Rome, this report is carried out under the guidance of adaptation theory. Moreover, some practical translation strategies and methods have been implemented in this practice, whichwould better solve the problems in the translation process. This report is divided into four parts. The first part is about the brief introduction, including task description, research objectives and significance of this report, translation process and layout of the report. The second part is literature review. It discusses tourism texts, including the definition of tourist texts and differences between Chinese and English tourist texts.Adaptation theory is illustrated in detail, which contains three properties of language and four perspectives of language adaptation.Previous studies on tourism translation and adaptation theory both abroad and at home are also introduced. The third part is the application of adaptation theory to tourism translation. It analyzes the guidance of adaption theory to tourism translation from four perspectives, including contextual adaptation in tourism translation, structural adaptation in tourism translation, dynamics of adaptability in tourism translation and salience of the adaptation process. The fourth part comes to the conclusion. It involves the major findings of the study, limitations of the present research and some suggestions for future researches. It is hoped that this report can give some enlightenment to the future researches.
