Abstract/Summary:
The essence of the literature translation lies in the translation of style,so does that of the fiction translation. Therefore, fiction translators should pay special attention to the translation of style, which plays an important role in shaping characters and reproducing contexts.Although most scholars in the translation field have achieved a consensus that the literature style is translatable, the translation practice still seems to lack the guidance of a macro theory.Drawing on cases in the translation practice of Give Up the Ghost(2015),a fiction written by the American writer Juliet Blackwell.,the thesis attempts to analyze how to effectively reproduce the original style in the translation from the perspective of the adaptation theory.Following Liu Miqing’s(2005)theory of stylistic formal markers, the author first classifies the stylistic formal markers in Give Up the Ghost into four types:namely, lexical markers, markers of figures of speech, syntactic markers, and graphological markers. In accordance to the adaptation theory proposed by Jef Verschueren(2000),the author then analyzes how to choose appropriate translation strategies implied by the adaptation to contexts and language structures so as to solve difficulties in the translation of stylistic formal markers and to reproduce the fiction style. This study finds that translators can employ certain translation strategies through adaptation to contexts and structures so as to make TT readers fully perceive the stylistic formal markers of the ST.The adaption to the linguistic context and communicative context can provide translators with the basis for choosing lexical markers and markers of figures of speech in the Chinese language, aiming to reproduce the mental world and social world of characters.Meanwhile, through adapting to the language structures, translators can flexibly deal with syntactic markers and graphological markers and avoid the barriers of transmitting the information implied in the context.Taken together,it seems that the adaptation theory has its feasibility and efficiency in the translation of fictional style.
