The Diachronic Development Of The Combining Forms Of The Demonstrative Pronouns "Zhe/Na" In Modern Chinese

Based on the development of the demonstrative pronouns "zhe/na" from Tangwudai to Qing, this thesis describes the combining forms of the demonstrative pronouns "zhe/na" in every dynasty from the angle of diachronic development, makes the development clues clear, concludes a series of rules and characteristics, and breakes through the classical molds of past studies, which always set about from syntactic functions, transfers the main emphasis of our researches to syntactic structures.This research is based on the precondition of investigation of eight books such as Zu Tang Ji, Dun Huang Bian Wen Ji Xin Shu, Gu Zun Su Yu Yao, Zhu Zi Yu Lei, Zhang Xie Zhuang Yuan, Xin Jiao Yuan Kan Za Ju San Shi Zhong, Xi You Ji, Er Nu Ying Xiong Zhuan, by describing the combining forms of the demonstrative pronouns "zhe/na" in the eight books, we observe the production, development and transform of the demonstrative pronouns "zhe/na" from Tangwudai to Qing. And we findthat:In Modern Chinese, "zhe/na" had produced these combining types: (1) "zhe/na" connects with nominal components. (2) "zhe/na" connects with verbal components. (3) "zhe/na" connects with fangweici. (4) "zhe/na" is used alone.As to the oringin of the combining forms, some were formed by substituting for the old demonstrative pronouns, the other were formed by combining with other components.The development process can divide into two stages:Tangwudai and Song had laid the groundwork of the combining forms of the demonstrative pronouns "zhe/na". In this period, the four types of the combining forms of the demonstrative pronouns "zhe/na" had all emerged,and had gained some development.Yuan Ming Qing is the matural stage, and it can divided into two stages:Yuan, ia a abosorbing and digesting stage, it had acceptted or rejected the combining forms with selectivity.Ming, is a supplementing and perfecting stage, In Ming, the situation of "zhe/na" being connected with the verbal components had gainded great development. And Qinghad mainly supplemented the components of the combining forms.With reference to the inner development of "zhe/na", the development of "zhe" and "na" were in inbalance. On the hole, the development of "zhe" is faster than the development of "na". But at the situation of "zhe/na" being connected with nominal components, the situation is complicated, the development of "zhe"and "na" always has reverse and interative phonoment.
