A Comparative Functional Study Of English And Chinese Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronoun is the central content in Pragmatics. In the recent years, along with the further research into language units and determination semantics characteristics, demonstrative pronoun gradually came into the sight of the pragmatic and semantic scientists. Also it became a very important part in the study of the pragmatics. Demonstrative pronoun is the most original and basic way to demonstrate language. The most basic functions are the demonstrative function and the referential function. This thesis concentrates on the demonstrative pronoun of the pragmatics. And it takes the most typical demonstrative pronouns "this,that" and "è¿™,é‚£" as the objects of study. Then, the author makes a comparative study from the perspective of demonstrative pronoun's function to analyze their differences and similarities as well as in-depth reasons between these two languages.Demonstrative pronoun is the basic category of the language. It is the need of linguistic study to make the comparative research. The pronoun is the basic way to express the demonstration. This thesis is studying the pronoun from the demonstrative perspective. It can show the internal unity of the pronoun system more clearly. At the same time, the present demonstrative study could be enriched. The thesis states the definition of demonstrative pronoun and its basic system and compares them. It also illuminates the using and understanding influence which is made by the demonstrative reference and the linguistic context. And meanwhile this thesis also makes a comparative study of the demonstrative pronoun's demonstrative function and referential function. It mainly makes a comparative study of the gestural usage and the symbolic usage, based on referential function between English and Chinese.Demonstrative pronoun's comparative study can help English learners to understand the fine differences among the grammar, the semantics and cultures. The thesis will have the active effect on the deeper study of the relationship between Chinese and English and the rule of the development of the languages. It will guide the English teaching and practice.
