English and Chinese differ sharply in phonetics, semantics and grammar. As for proverbs, they are concise in language, profound in meaning, and hold the properties of both utterance and text, with unique artistic charm and cultural value, thus proverbs and proverb translation attract a lot of researchers' attention. The present study on proverb translation mainly focuses on proverb collections, or deals with its grammatical structure and rhetorical characteristics, or talks about the ideology, nationality and culture the proverb carries. However, the available studies are not comprehensive enough or thorough enough;most take proverbs as a self-dependent item in discussion, without thinking about their cotext;few refer to its aesthetic effect. In introduction, a literature review of proverb translation at home and broad is presented. The main body of the dissertation gives an analysis of proverb translation in the four aspects. Based on the previous researchers' achievements, the second chapter includes proverbs' linguistic features in structure, rhetoric and phonetics. Cultural factors of proverb translation are discussed in the third chapter, including cultural nationality, cultural dynamics, cultural driftability and cultural compatibility, and four means of reflecting, projecting, refracting and insinuating to interpret cultural meaning. The fourth chapter explores pragmatic perspective of proverb translation, with the concepts of context, illocutionary force and their instruction and application in proverb translation. Four aesthetics' psychological factors, sensibility, imagination, emotion and apperception and their application in proverb translation are the focus in the fifth chapter. In the last chapter, a conclusion is arrived at that this dissertation is supposed to give a more comprehensive, more thorough illumination on proverb translation.
