The Cohesion And Coherence Of Li Bai's Five-syllable Quatrain

Discourse analysis is a new branch in linguistics. It probes the organization and structural function of text through the research of intra-sentence structure. Influenced by the western text theory, the text analysis in our country is developed and fruitful. More and more scholars make a shift from Traditional Grammar approach to the domain of Text. Text analysis is a must to Chinese research. As an discipline of multi-faced features and unsettled nature, there is no approach accepted by everyone to the analysis of the text. We can analyze text from different domain and angle. Cohesion and coherence are the basic concept and important subject in discourse analysis.The thesis investigates the cohesion and coherence of Li Bai's 86 five-syllable quatrains under the guidance of the systemic-functional grammar. The whole paper contains five characters : the logic-semantic relation;the spatio-temporal system;the grammatical cohesion;the lexical cohesion and the rhetorical cohesion . In logic-semantic relation, we focus on the analysis of logical relationship and the way of connection between clause 1,2 and clause 3,4. In spatio-temporal system, we analyze the way of organization between time and space and probe the artistic time and space based on the psychology and culture. In the grammatical cohesion , we discuss the anaphora , substitution, and ellipsis. In lexical cohesion , we analyze how the lexicons connect the text through the way of repetition, synonymy and analogy. In rhetorical cohesion , we analyze the rhetorical cohesive devices and it's contribution to the coherence through the rhetorical devices such as: simile, hyperbole, personification, allusion etc. Through the investigation of a text, the thesis reveals the distinctive feature of this kind of text in addition to some general rules of the organization of Chinese discourse.
