Purpose: 1) To compare the mental health and social support of impoverished university students with general students; to observe the correlation between social support, stress evaluation, self-esteem and mental health. 2) Based on above conclusion and aiming at the especial object, this study use multivariance regression of social support, stress evaluation, self-esteem and mental health to explore the direct-effect function and buffering function of social support in the course of stress affecting impoverished university students' mental health, and bring forward theoretical model, and try to make clear the functional mechanism of social support's effect to the mental health of impoverished university students so as to provide theoretical foundation and practical guide to assist them.Method: Questionnaires and Interview. Research instruments include Adolescent Self-Rating Life Event Check List, Social Support Rating Scale, Self-Esteem Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory. Regression and general linear model were used to test the direct-effect and buffering function of social support and self-esteem on the mental health. In order to find out more information and reinforce questionnaires research, five typical students were interviewed.Conclusion: 1) Relative to general students, social support gained by impoverished university students is less, stress evaluation is severer, self-esteem is lower and mental health is worse, and that the difference is significant. 2) There is no significant difference between impoverished university students from city and from country, and the difference is too between male and female, female is only more on the degree of using social support. 3) Subjective support may preferably forecast anxiety of impoverished university students; subjective support and impersonal support may preferably forecast depression of them. 4) To mental health of impoverished university students, social support has not only direct-effect function, but also buffering function, but the buffering function only occur in the anxiety of impoverished university students; self-esteem has not only direct-effect effect, but also buffering effect, but the buffering effect only occur in the depression of impoverished university students...
