In the course of human artistic activities, people have been directed by their latent instinct, and subconsciousness factors have been playing a key role in the process of human artistic creation. Based on the fundamental theories of artistic creation and subconsciousness, as well as my personal experience in the creation of watercolor painting, the present thesis aims to conduct an in-depth study on the relationship between watercolor painting and subconsciousness from an irrational perpective. The recent psychological theories in the West have exerted great impacts on the development of modern literature and art. Profound among these theories is Psychoanalytic school proposed by Fueud with subconsciousness as its core theory. Psychologists such as Fueud, CarlGustavJung, and Fromm held their respective views on subconsciousness. Subconsciousness closely correlates with artistic creation in that any touching work of art can not be completed without entailing subconsciousnessin the creative process of that work. Maneuvering their deep-level affective factors to their full extent, the artists exchange with the work of art through their employment of brush-pencils and colors in the creative process. Therefore, the work of art is endowed with all the personal qualities of the artists. People are capable of observing the psychological changes unintentionally expressed by the artists and of exploring the in-depth psychological connotation of the artists when appreciating their work of art. Some artists and writers have depicted the relationship between their artistic creation and the employment of subconsciousness in the creative process. The characteristic of the creation of watercolor painting is that it requires artists to make a model, fill in colors, and express their emotions in a limited time. It is difficult for them to make careful and reasonable considerations over each brush-pencil and each patch of colors in thecreative process. Accordingly, subconsciousness should be put into its full use in the process of artistic creation. Subconsciousness is closely connected with personal experience, activities, and social environment the artists are exposed to. The society and social environment provide us with sources of enrichment and creation, whereas the accumulation of emotion and knowledge has a significant effect on the full employment of subconsciousness. In modern art, human latent consciousness gains respect and human emotions are liberated. It is suggested that the latent aesthetic consciousness should be exploited to full advantage in the process of artistic creation.
