Since the beginning of the twentieth century, traditional Chinese painting encountered violent impingement, especially after 80's, "traditional Chinese painting has already dead", "west modernist painting is modernistic art, because of high frequency, new conception and many ploys". The cry "Chinese painting maybe have life force when it possess modernity, world-wide and nationality" is higher and higher. At the same time, Chinese painting in these days has divided into traditional painting, institute painting and modern wash. Chinese painting artists grasp less and less Chinese traditional culture, and their paintings are short of pen and ink. We don't exclude "new exploration", but these Chinese painters who insist on traditional Chinese painting have already been assimilated by the west modernist paintings, so traditional pen and ink is missing and color is overrun. The content of this paper is based on the Chinese painting of the traditional literators, in which the traditional pen and ink is detailedly discussed. " Handwriting participates in Chinese painting" make Chinese painting more excellent. On the contrary, Chinese painting has not only expanded expressive force of pen and ink, but also increased the content of nationality. Traditional Chinese paintings not only possess the ability of expressing feelings and representing vision, but also bear the weight of spirit of Chinese traditional culture. Because of the influence of 'Taoist school idea', Chinese traditional literator painters in absolute pursuit of "feeling and art" possessed modernity. Pen and ink have strong nationality. Developing pen and ink can ensure Chinese paintings not to be assimilated by the west modernist paintings. Chinese painting using color has its own rule and limitation. Developing color will be successful only when the pen and ink are mastered well. The potential of pen and ink is enormous. Men nowadays must build up self-confidence and proper pride of national culture, mainly advocating our own nationalism. We should study the theory and skills of Chinese painting, enhance the strength of learning traditional culture, which includes the idea of the Confucianists, Taoist and Buddha. It is important for us to start with art rule, go deep into life and research the frame of pen and ink. Along with the coming of the modernist, some artists have realized the importance of the nationality culture, such as Peng Xiancheng, Song Wenzhi and Lu Yushun, and so on. They have expanded the expressive force of traditional pen and ink when they research into traditional pen and ink.
