Since the end of the 1980's, the mass culture has achieved a prosperous development,which has brought inevitable influences on the literary circle of China. With their viewpoint,spiritual pursuit and art techniques having more and more characteristics of individuality, thewriters gradually drew themselves back from the "one-common- langue" world and they haveconstructed their own writing sphere with their own particular means. Some writers began toconfront the impact on literature imposed by the mass-media age with an constant newcreative attitude and they succeeded in coming near to the mass culture. One of therepresentatives of those is Chi Li. Her early works, for example " The Moon is Good",reflect men's personal experiences. Her middle period works, for example " The AnnoyingLife", depict men's deep personal experiences and inspiration. The 1990's works, for example" Coming and Going", presents the various men's life under the economic age. On the onehand, Chi Li has made successful transition of her works with sensitive point of viewexperiencing the changes of social life; on the other hand, she succeeds in combining herliterary creation with the mass media due to her sharp mastering the characteristics of the ageof the mass media. Through her constant and conscious pursuing of the special characteristicsof arts, she intentionally makes herself a popular writer, which stands for the merge ofintellectuals and the mass culture. This essay will focus on the following aspects. First, we will start from the analysis of her cultural background. She started to writeconsciously from the 1980' s and the 1990's, which was the time for the whole prosperity ofthe Chinese mass culture. The article focuses on the writing characteristics of Chi Li's writingthrough the rising of the Chinese mass culture, the defining of the mass culture and thepopular culture, the mass culture and elite culture and the explanation of the culturalbackground. Secondly, the article focuses on her writing stand through the analysis of her culturalchoice. Chi Li always faces life and tells her stories facing the people. Thus, she chooses thestand of the common people to present her works and at the same time, she always regardherself as one of them. She writes for her life and her life's need and especially for the readers.Her unchanging pursuit is her focus and her presentation of the individuals. While showing anobvious adornment for the common people, she shows a strong disgust to the elite culture ofintellectuals. Her writing stand of going into the masses and embracing the secularized massculture can be concluded through the analysis of her literary stand and writing characteristics. Thirdly, through the analysis of her creative presentation of her works, one can see howshe succeeds in the transformation towards mass culture while keeps her creativecharacteristics. The first change is her writing material. In her two periods of creation, one canperceive the enormous transformation of living environment and characters and etc. She nolonger focuses on the quiet and change-lack life under the planned economy, the works of thisperiod is "The Annoying Life" and " To Live is Good, No Matter it is Cold or Hot". From theworks "Coming and Going", She focuses on life, individual and the change and conflict ofdomestic love, her change is from "common life " to "urban romance". The second change isthe narrative pattern. From the 1990's, she experiences a gigantic change in her point of view,narrative language and way of narration. She gives up the zero distance way of writing andstarts to express philosophically with poetic language and tries to discover poeticism form thedrab life. She also absorbs the probability and dramatization into her works. These changeshave provides her works with a deep wisdom glamour. The third change is her awareness ofher sex. In her early works, she does not have a clear awareness of the position and power offemales, instead she stands at the position of males to express life. From the 1990?...
