The present thsis is a survey of Nanjiang dialect. The Nanjiang County is one of the counties in the northeast of Sichuan Province. It is to the north of Shanxi (陕西) Province. Nanjiang dialect belongs to the southwest Mandarin dialects, which is itself part of the larger set of Northern Dialects.There is a tendency of putting more importance on researches on dialects found in big cities, for example, on Chengdu or Chongqing dialect. There are already many achievements in scientific researches that can be referred to. But the study of the dialect in small town is only superficial, and so far no one has published any extensive report or monograph on Nanjiang dialect. So, to make a thorough investigation and study of Nanjiang dialect, and describe it in considerable, will be not only helpful in the research of Chinese dialect, but also has a great significance towards a better understanding of the philological evolution of the Sichuan dialect, as well as the whole of Northern Dialects.This thesis is a comprehensive description and analysis of the data about Nanjiang dialect, including its phonology, vocabulary, grammar etc. The thesis has seven chapters, which outline is following:Chapter One introduces the natural, geographical, historical and economical conditions of the Nanjiang County in briefly.Chapter Two analyses the phonological system of Nanjiang dialect. It describes its phonology, including initials, finals, tones and the relationships between the three parts, etc.Chapter Three is a syllabary of Nanjiang dialect, the first row gives on final, and arranges every monosyllabic words belong to the group of that final in order of initial and tones.Chapter Four explains not only the correspondence between the phonology, including initials and tones of Nangjiang dialect and the Middle Chinese in considerable detail , including initials and tones of Nangjiang dialect and Putonghua (common speech of Chinese language) in considerable detail. On the other hand, the Chapter describes the geographical and social differences within Nanjiang dialect.Chapter Five is discussing the tone sandhi of disyllables including the [er] rime and the tone sandhi.Chapter Six is a glossary of more than one thousand common words found in Nanjiang dialect ,which is classified in 29 items by word meaning.Chapter Seven is a detailed description of the characteristic grammatical phenomenon, including suffix"头", "儿" "子" reduplication phenomenon, special auxiliary"把", "打", "得",special model of adjectives.
