Studies On Shanghe Dialect

The present thesis is a survey of Shanghe dialect. The Shanghe County is one of the counties in the northwest of Shandong Province. Shanghe dialect belongs to Xiqi (西齐) group, which is itself part of the larger set of Shandong dialect, which is one part of the Jilu (冀鲁) Mandarin dialects.The study of Shandong dialect develops rapidly. Many kinds of dialect gazettes have been published, such as the gazettes of Jinan, Qufu and Linqing, but so far no one has published any extensive report or monograph on Shanghe dialect. So, to make a thorough investigation and study of Shanghe dialect, and describe it in considerable, will be not only helpful in the research of Northwest of Shandong dialects, but also has a great significance towards a better understanding of the philological evolution of the Shandong dialect, as well as the whole of Jilu dialects.This thesis is a comprehensive description and analysis of the data about Shanghe dialect, including its phonology, vocabulary, grammar etc. The thesis has four chapters, which outline is following:Chapter One introduces the natural, geographical, historical conditions of the Shanghe County in briefly.Chapter Two analyses the phonology of Shanghe dialect. First, it describes its phonological system, including initials, finals, tones and the relationships between the three parts, etc. Second, a syllabary of Shanghe dialect is given. Third, the Chapter discusses the tone sandhi of disyllables--the [er] rime. Fourth, it explains the correspondence between the phonology, including initials and tones of Shanghe dialect and the Middle Chinese (中古音) in considerable detail, and gives some developing rules. Lastly, the Chapter describes the geographical and social differences within Shanghe dialect.Chapter Three is a glossary of characteristic common words found in Shanghe dialect, which is classified in 27 items by word meaning.Chapter Four is a detailed description of the characteristic grammatical phenomenon, including special reduplication of adjectives phenomenon, two special predications "家走"and "手冷", a procession" 逮",a kind of copy topic structure etc.
