On Liu Fang

Liu Fang is the famous historian in the middle of Tang dynasty.He was born in a famous family-liu family in HeDong .Liu Fang is a official about the latter part of TangXuanZong Times.His main actions are in TangSuZong Times.During this period ,LiuFang is in charge of writing history affairs .At that time,writing history system in Tang dynasty tend to be perfect gradually .LiuFang's TANGLI become the valuable base for later generations to write history affairs.Because of his excellent ability and contributions LiuFang plays an important role in science of history of Tang dynasty.LiuFang' s achievements are not only in the science of history,but also in the science of family tree.His works YONGTAIXINPU is praised by TangWenZong,and TangWenZong commands his grandson to continue LiuFang's works.In addition, LiuFang' s comments to big family trees -XINGXILUN becomes one of the important material for reference when people study big families in Tang dynasty.LiuFang has many academic works in the science of history,he also has especial ideas in economic problem.In the paper of SHIHUOLUN in the 372th volume of the QUANTANGWEN ,LiuFang puts forth his deep comments to the Minister who is in charge of economic affairs and their ideas of solving economic problems.This article aims at bringing to the light the import position of LiuFang in the science of history in Tang dynasty and his works especially TANGLI's value of historical studies by the systematically and comprehensively textual research on LiuFang and his works.The full text is composed of nine parts.The first part sets forth LiuFang's ancestors in several dynasties are all official families every generation .The second part is the difficult one ,which reappears LiuFang's youthful time by analyzing limited historical materials.The third part discusses LiuFang's takes a short cut to officialdom-through imperial civil examination.The forth part analyses LiuFang' s continuing WeiShu's GUOSHI.The fifth part puts forth ups and downs LiuFang's official career and the cause of LiuFang's demotion.The sixth part is the key part .It make TANGLI s value clear on historical studies by discussing TANGLI's writing process ,its contents,etc,There are three small sections in this partBy analyzing the quotation from TANGLI cited by Simaguang 's ZIZHITONGJIAN and XINTANGSHU ,the author probes into the value of TANGLI.and comments on it from positive and negative aspects.The seventh part discusses LiuFang's other achievements in the science of family tree-YONGTAIXINPU and XINGXILUN.The eighth part is LiuFang's exploration in economic issue.The last part expounds LiuFang's son and grandsons contributions to the science of history.
