In the history of calligraphy, imperial calligraphers were more concerned. Tang Dynasty emperors took the first place both in the number of their works and the level of handwriting. The reason why the rapid development of the Tang Dynasty art of calligraphy, is firmly connected with the advocacy of emperors. From Li Shimin in the Early Tang to Li Longji in the lourishing Tang, they made great impact on the development of calligraphy more or less. Li Shu was flouring in Wei and Han Dynasty, and began to fall behind in Early Tang. To the time of Kaiyuan, Li Longji emerged, and created minghuangxinti, which became popular in various walks of lifeThis paper consists of five parts:The first part mainly talks about the life of Li Longji and his major artistic achievements, through which comprehensive understanding is obtained.The second part mainly introduces the background from the aspects of politics, economic and cultural spheres of poetry, religion and education system.The third part describes some of the major achievements in calligraphy Li Longji obtained, and its main representative Lishu work Shitaixiaojing in Li Shu and Jilingsong in Xing Shu from several aspects.The forth part manly disscuses the relationships between Li Longji and the developments of Li Tangli, from which the vital status of Li Longji can be illustrated.The fifth part mainly makes comments on Li Longji calligraphy. Compared with Li Shimin and Han Zemu, innovative spirits of the times was seen on Li Longji. Also some shortcomings were showed in his calligraphy works.
