Study On The Rhetorical Use Of Punctuations And Symbols In Works Of Lu Xun

As a master in modern Chinese literature and language, not only does Lu Xun pioneer the introduction of punctuations, but he also produces a perfect example by using them. Thanks to his superb artistic command of punctuations, the literary language of Lu Xun always radiates elegance and glamour. As a consequence, the status of punctuations has been lifted to a higher level, greatly enriching and giving full play of the charm of modern Chinese literary language. Therefore, many a person, from his time on, have taken the works of Lu Xun as example, and analyzed the rhetorical function of punctuations and symbols. Nevertheless, still remains unborn a systematic and comprehensive article, with the complete -works ofLu Xun as resources, and mainly dealing with the rhetorical usage of punctuations and symbols. With rhetoric theory of Chen Wangdao as fundation, and relevant insights of some scholars such as Zhang Dihua, Hu Yushu, Cheng Weijun, Tang Zhongyang and Wang Dechun as reference, this thesis proceeds an exploratory study on the unique rhetorical function of punctuations and symbols in an all-round and systematic manner. This study has covered most literary works of Lu Xun, among which there are novels, essays and proses. With this paper, the writer intends to invite more minds in highlighting the rhetorical function of punctuations and symbols, with the aim to correct the current chaos in mixing the grammatical and rhetorical functions together. Hence, may this dissertation make us approach Lu Xun, understand and appreciate him. Furthermore, more knowledge and a broader scope as well as a practical service to the society are also expected. Then, the effort on this article can be claimed successful.
