In the study of Chinese modern novels, narratology has been wildly used as one of the theoretical aspects by researchers. And in the common effort of the researchers, the narrative research of Chinese modern novels has achieved a lot. As the research goes into depth and the translation and introduction of the theory on occidental novels gets ever enriched and comprehensive, people gradually realize that the rhetoric of fiction could also provide us a much wider research path, from which we could not only renew our theoretical field of vision, but also to certain extent make up the weakness and theoretical blind spot of narratology and other research methods. In recent years, many scholars have made some instructive researches and got certain achievements. But some deficiencies still exist in a whole aspect. It mainly embodies in three aspects. Firstly, on the study of Chinese modern novels, more attentions are put on the theoretical expatiation than on the actual state. Secondly, theoretical divisions between narrative study and rhetoric study are not effectively done, which consequently prevent the rhetoric study from giving full play to its long suit of theory and therefore affect the thoroughness and validity of rhetoric study on Chinese modern novels. All those above have made the rhetoric study of Chinese modern novels lack of the aspect of history.Based on that understanding, the trace of transmutation of rhetoric pattern of Chinese fiction will be studied primarily in this dissertation by choosing a comparatively long but intact study unit as an example which includes the novels from colloquial stories in Song and Yuan dynasty to the ones of may 4th movement, so as to try to find out an intact clue for the modern transformation of rhetoric pattern of Chinese fiction. At the same time, through the study of the historic process of formation and development of the novelists' individual consciousness and awareness of time and space, the immanent cause of the formation and development of the rhetoric pattern of the Chinese modern novels will be revealed. Besides that, it will also apply the time view of the rhetoric of May-4th-movement fiction to the rhetoric tradition unique to Chinese novels, so as to display the feature of rhetoric pattern of Chinese modern novels to the full. The dissertation is composed of five chapters.Chapter one: elaborate relative theoretical problems and explain the train of thoughts of the dissertation. If the study of rhetoric of fiction want to gain its comparative independence and thoroughness, the theoretical boundary between narrative and rhetoric study must be clear. In this part, the background and cause for the rise of narratology are firstly analyzed and by the way the theoretical limitation is also taken into consideration. On such a basis and combined with the process of the relative theory in the western world,...
